The storage of Altagamma is ordered by length. Estel files four units of one height, 87 cm, and one depth, 46: 100, 150, 180 and 200 cm long, in veneer, Ecopelle Time or Pelle Soft. Then three compositions, in veneer only: 220 cm from two 50 modules and one of 120, 240 from two 60 and one of 120, 320 from one 120 and two 100, each with a glazed central top.

In front of that wall stands the desk, drawn in-house by Estel R&D and filed among designer office tables without an outside name. Its legs are aluminium, 11 cm in profile and 15 mm thick, and Estel finishes the frame they form three ways: steel-anodised aluminium, a matt bronze, a pewter quartz. Between them runs the modesty panel, 11 cm deep, which houses the wiring compartment of an executive cabin desk.

Read the tops by material. Veneer first: the fixed desk at 75 cm in 180 × 90, 210 × 100 and 240 × 100, the version with the 210 × 170 service unit, the Altagamma Life whose top rises from 75 to 125 cm. Leather and Ecopelle Time next, on the same desks and on the 240 or 280 meeting desk with a leather centre. Glass last: a clear 15 mm top on the 180 and 210 desks and on the meeting tables.

What is inside the 11 cm modesty panel, and why is it that thick?

Cables, and the room to route them. The panel that links the two legs of Altagamma is 11 cm thick and houses the compartment for the wiring; Estel's price list says it can hold a large quantity of cables, which the user reaches from above through the top access. It is finished like the top, in veneer, Ecopelle Time or Pelle Soft.

Will a dry cloth be enough for the veneer, or does it need a product?

A dry cloth, for most days. Estel's Product Care puts dirt and liquids on the veneer under one rule: wipe with a dry cloth, and for heavier soiling use a neutral water-based detergent on a cloth that is only slightly damp, then rub again once the surface is dry. The list of what not to use is short and firm: no acidic or alkaline products, and no microfibre cloths on the wood. A silicone-free furniture polish is allowed, not more than once a year, tried first where it will not show. Hot or wet objects and sharp edges are what the manual names as damage.

Which other Estel pieces sit next to the desk in the catalogue photographs?

Five names, all from the Estel range and all declared in the captions. Embrasse Office seats on castors appear beside the meeting desk and the Life; a Dolly sofa and armchairs furnish the sitting corner; the Libra bookcase stands behind the Sit&Stand with service unit; Deck units and E-Wall wall units frame the Life. The captions also name two finishes on the photographed desks: walnut veneer on the Life with a matt bronze base, and black-stained oak on the Sit&Stand with a pewter quartz base. Nothing else in those rooms is named by Estel.

How far does the Sit&Stand top travel, and how do you know where it is?

From 75 to 125 cm, the figures printed in Estel's price list for the Sit&Stand desk and for the Altagamma Life. The catalogue describes the control as a digitised lifting mechanism with a push button and a progressive display of the movement, up and down, so the height is read on the panel rather than guessed. Estel ties the version to the well-known ergonomic prescription of alternating a seated and a standing posture during the working day.

What exactly do the 210 × 170 cm of the service-unit version measure?

The whole footprint, not the top. On the drawing the desk top is 210 × 90 cm, the service unit set at right angles is 190 × 50 and 57 cm high, and the two together occupy 210 × 170, with 20 cm of top passing beyond the unit. The code fixes the side: GAZ00 right, GAZ04 left, and the same choice returns on the Sit&Stand version, GAZ10 and GAZ14. Modesty panel, side panels and the unit itself come in veneer only, whatever the top is made of.

Ordering Altagamma by Estel's GA codes, from configuration to socket module

Estel's price list spells every Altagamma choice as a code. Five steps put the configuration, the top, the frame, the side and the power module on one order line each, in the manufacturer's own language.

Pick the configuration code

Start from what the desk has to be. Altagamma at a fixed 75 cm is GAA54, GAA51 or GAA52 for 180 × 90, 210 × 100 and 240 × 100; the same desk in glass is GAZ94 or GAZ91 for 180 and 210. With a service unit the code becomes GAZ00 or GAZ04; the Sit&Stand with unit is GAZ10 or GAZ14; the Life runs from GAA70 to GAA92, and from GAA75 to GAA78 when the fixed 120 × 60 return is wanted.

Name the top and modesty

The top finish is written next to the code: Essenza, Ecopelle Time, Pelle Soft or clear glass. The modesty panel follows the top in the same finish, except on the two versions where the price list admits veneer only, the desk with service unit and the Life; under a glass top the panel is in Essenza, Ecopelle Time or Pelle Soft, and that finish goes on the order too.

Choose the frame finish

Steel-anodised aluminium is the frame finish printed in the tables; matt bronze and pewter quartz are the two alternatives Estel lists for the base. The word goes on the order next to the configuration code; the price list prints the bronze and pewter options in a column of their own.

Fix the side and top access

Where a unit or a return is involved the code already carries the side: right for GAZ00, GAZ10, GAA70, GAA72, GAA75 and GAA76; left for GAZ04, GAZ14, GAA90, GAA92, GAA77 and GAA78. Then the top access: double-sided or frame type, with the lid in leather or in wood, for every top except glass, which the price list excludes from wiring. On the Life the top access is always included.

Add module and cable

Four black modules close the order: Tipo 1 GC030 with three Schuko and two RJ45 cat. 6, Tipo 2 GC032 adding two 5 V USB chargers, Tipo 3 GC034 with an HDMI and a USB coupler, Tipo 4 GC036 with three Schuko and two USB. Tipo 2 and Tipo 3 are not available for the service unit. Cable GC090, 2.8 m, Schuko plug to GST 18-3 socket, on its own line; international standards on request.
