Frequently asked questions

These are the questions we are asked most often, answered the way we would answer them on a call. If yours is not here, write to info@lamercanti.com or call +39 0735 753833. A person reads every message, and we acknowledge within one working day.

About us

Who are La Mercanti?

We have been furnishing offices, law firms and contract projects since 1997, from Italy, and we ship worldwide. We are not a manufacturer: selecting is the work. We buy directly from the makers — most of them Italian workshops — and we handle everything around the product ourselves: specification, space planning, freight, installation and the years of service that follow.

Because we have no factory of our own to defend, we can tell you what actually suits your space, even when the answer is a table from one house and chairs from another.

Where is each product made?

Every product page states the country of origin. For most of our catalogue it reads Made in Italy, and for the few exceptions we say plainly where the piece is made. You should not have to ask, and you should not have to guess from the brand name.

Why work with us rather than a local supplier?

For the pieces themselves, and for the way they are specified. The brands we carry are the ones that appear in international specifications, and we supply the documentation that a specification needs: fire behaviour, emissions, provenance of materials, conformity with the EN standards for seating and work tables. We are certified to ISO 9001:2015 (certificate no. 9175.LMRC, issued by IMQ).

And for the fact that one company carries the order end to end. Between your purchase order and a furnished floor sit the manufacturer, the forwarder, customs and the site. Our job is that those seams do not become your problem.

Are the products genuine?

Yes. We buy through the manufacturers' official channels only; every piece is new and arrives with its maker's documentation. No replicas, no refurbished stock, nothing of uncertain provenance — and where you need it, we can supply the manufacturer's own certificate of authenticity with the consignment.

Which brands do you represent?

The list is on the brands page and changes as collections come and go. If what you are looking for is not there, ask anyway: the catalogues run wider than the website.

Do you have references?

We do, and we prefer to show you work of a comparable size and sector rather than a list of names. A twenty-seat law office and a corporate floor have very little in common.

Before ordering

Do you work with architects and design practices?

Extensively — in India more than anywhere, the high-end project reaches us through the practice rather than the end client. We provide drawings and project files, samples for the client presentation, product data and certificates for the specification, and we phase delivery and installation to the site programme. Trade terms are set project by project: send us a floor plan and a budget range.

Can I see the pieces or get samples?

Samples of finishes, fabrics and leathers we send to you — and we recommend it on every project of any size, because a screen never gives you the right shade and these materials vary from batch to batch. For larger projects we arrange visits to the manufacturers' showrooms and factories in Italy: seeing how a seat shell is formed changes how you specify.

Can dimensions and finishes be changed?

Usually, and further than people expect. Most collections offer a range of timbers, laminates, fabrics, leathers and colours, listed on each product page, and several ranges also allow sizes outside the catalogue, quoted case by case. Tell us the constraint — a column, a doorway, a lift car — and we will find out what is possible.

All dimensions on this site are metric, as they are here: no conversions to read past.

One thing to know before you order: a piece built to your dimensions is made for you alone and cannot be returned.

How do we start on a whole floor?

With a plan and two facts: how many people, and what kind of work happens there. From that comes a layout with a budget attached, and only then the product selection. Done the other way round, the budget goes and the storage still falls short.

Ordering and delivery

How do I place an order?

Items available for immediate despatch can be ordered from the product page. For special configurations, quantities and projects, use the quotation form: we prepare an individual offer, and the order becomes firm with a written confirmation. For anything beyond a couple of items, a short call first saves a great deal of email.

How do I pay?

By bank transfer or card, on the terms set out in the offer. For companies we work to agreed payment terms and invoice in the ordinary way.

How long does it take?

The production time is on each product page — from ready to despatch to about eight weeks — and it runs from the moment the order is complete, that is, once finish, fabric, dimensions and configuration are confirmed. Freight is added to that. For India the mode makes an order of magnitude of difference between sea and air, so we do not publish a fixed figure: we state the mode, the cost and the duration with the quotation, and confirm the actual date in writing once the manufacturer confirms the order.

What about customs duty and GST?

Our prices do not include Indian GST or customs duty. These arise on import and are payable by you as the importer.

We do not leave that to be discovered at clearance: the estimate is stated on every quotation, before you order. The clearance itself is handled by the freight forwarder — you fill in nothing — and we supply the manufacturer's documentation needed for the entry.

Can I cancel an order?

Yes — free of charge within 5 days of confirmation, whatever stage it has reached. After that it depends how far the order has gone: nothing while it is still with us, 30% once it has been placed with the manufacturer, and no cancellation once production has begun or the goods have shipped. We tell you the stage before any amount is withheld.

And the commitment cuts both ways: if we ever had to cancel an order for reasons of our own, you would receive a full refund plus the same 30% consideration we ask of you. We have not had to, but a term that binds only one side is not a fair term.

Can a product be returned?

As a rule, no: each piece is produced against your order, in your configuration, and cannot go back to a shelf. That is why we put the effort before the order — samples, written confirmation of every dimension, and five days to think again. If we do agree a return in a particular case, the return freight is yours and we tell you the figure first: as a guide, ₹50,000 for a chair or small item, ₹100,000 for a desk, pedestal or single piece, and from ₹120,000 for larger orders.

If something is wrong rather than simply unwanted — a fault, transit damage, a delivery that does not match the confirmation — none of the above applies. That is ours to fix.

After delivery

Do you install?

Delivery to the building entrance is included in the price. Carrying in, placement and installation are quoted project by project, and we will tell you plainly where we have a team we trust and where we do not — we would rather decline than promise a service we cannot stand behind. Manufacturers' assembly drawings and technical support come with every order.

What if something arrives damaged?

Check the packages before signing. If there is visible damage, sign the delivery document with a written reservation and send us photographs within 7 days at info@lamercanti.com — the packaging, the damage and the label. From there it is ours: we deal with the carrier and the manufacturer, and repair or replacement is at our cost.

What warranty applies?

Each piece carries its manufacturer's warranty, stated on the product page because it differs by brand. We run the claim for you: you deal with us, not with a factory in Italy. Transit damage is separate and always ours. For business purchases the contractual periods are those of Italian law: defects notified within 8 days of discovery, claims within 12 months of delivery.

Variation in timber grain, leather, fabric and marble is a property of the material, not a defect — on a natural surface it is the evidence that the material is real.

Who do I contact if there is a problem?

Write to info@lamercanti.com. Every message is read by a person who knows your order, and we acknowledge within one working day — sooner than the timeframe Indian e-commerce rules require of a grievance channel, which is the standard we hold ourselves to.

Will spare parts be available years from now?

In most cases, yes. The manufacturers we work with keep parts available well past the warranty period, and a castor, a gas lift or a fabric panel can usually be replaced rather than the whole piece. Send us the order number and we will check.
