A town centre for Bangalore, designed by Ben van Berkel's studio
Next to Manyata Tech Park, with views over Nagavara Lake, his studio has designed the Karle Town Centre in Bangalore, a mixed-use district conceived to pull people, families and investment back into the heart of a city often called India's Silicon Valley. The project is one of many in which Ben van Berkel treats a building as an urban microcosm rather than a single object. Educated at the Rietveld Academy and the Architectural Association, in 1988 he and Caroline Bos opened their first practice in Amsterdam; in 1999 it became UNS, the design and consulting network known as UNStudio, whose work runs from the Erasmus Bridge to stations in Madrid and Doha.
For a technology campus his most relevant piece of furniture is Node+, an island sofa he designed for LaCividina in 2021 after a study of what its users would actually do on it: lean, work, talk, withdraw. La Mercanti ships it to Indian offices with the composition drawn on the client's own floor plan.
