Luxury designer chairs Navy 1006 by Emeco in a corporate cafeteria

The chair that arrives with its paperwork: Emeco's Navy 1006 for LEED and WELL-rated buildings

Emeco

Green-rated buildings ask furniture for documents before they ask it for looks, and the Navy is among the rare chairs that turn up with the folder already full. Emeco publishes a Health Product Declaration disclosed to 1,000 ppm, a carbon footprint verified at 14.88 kg CO2e per chair, an ANSI/BIFMA e3 VOC declaration and a list of the credits the chair can contribute to: Sourcing of Raw Materials and Material Ingredients under LEED Materials and Resources, Low-Emitting Materials under Indoor Environmental Quality, Features X07 and I06 in WELL v2. For a fit-out chasing certification, that is correspondence the consultant does not have to start.

The reason the paperwork is so clean is that the chair is so simple: 80% recycled aluminium, welded into one piece, hand-brushed and anodised, 3 kg on the scale, nothing upholstered unless you add a pad. The same declarations cover the whole family, the 1006 chair and armchair, the counter stool seated at 61 cm, the barstool at 76, each with or without arms, and the Mini for the crèche, and La Mercanti attaches them to the quotation rather than to the delivery, while the consultant is still building the credit matrix. The chair then does what it has done since 1944, which is to sit in the room and be counted.

FAQ

How heavy is one Navy chair?
3 kg, or 7 lb on Emeco's sheet: light enough to lift with one hand, which is why the US Navy chose aluminium for its ships in 1944 and why housekeeping crews still like it. The armchair weighs 4 kg, the stools 3.5 to 4.5 kg.
Is aluminium a fire risk, and does it interfere with instruments?
No on both counts. Emeco describes its aluminium as naturally fireproof, with no flame-retardant treatment to add, and non-magnetic, one of the properties the Navy required aboard ships. The chair carries no foam or fabric unless a seat pad is fitted.
Which stool goes with a kitchen worktop and which with a bar?
The counter stool puts the seat at 61 cm with an overall height of 94 cm; the barstool at 76 cm and 109 cm. Emeco names them for the two surfaces they serve, and both come with or without arms.
How do I know a Navy is genuine on delivery?
Turn it over: the Emeco stamp is at the back of the seat. Then look at the top of the three backrest bars, where three small weld beads are left as the craftsman's signature, and under the seat, where the footrest is two parallel bars. Copies are usually spot-welded and painted rather than anodised.
How is it packed, and what does the carton say?
One chair per carton in recycled cardboard with recycled inner padding, 100% recyclable; the country of origin, USA, is printed on the box. Two chairs can travel in one carton of 66 × 46 × 102 cm.

How to order seat pads for a set of Navy chairs

Five decisions to put on the order line when a Navy 1006 gets an upholstered or felt pad, from the fabric family to the number of pieces.

Pick the family first
Emeco offers four upholstered options for the Navy, Kvadrat Reflect, Kvadrat Haku, Spinneybeck Volo leather and Sunbrella Heritage, plus a recycled-PET felt pad; write the family before the colour.
Separate indoors from outdoors
Only Sunbrella Heritage is an outdoor fabric; the felt pad carries a one-year indoor-only warranty, so terrace chairs take Sunbrella or no pad at all.
Measure your own material
If the project fabric is yours, send 0.25 m per seat, or 0.35 m² of leather; Emeco's foam and fabrics meet CAL 117, and your material should meet the same standard.
Count pads per piece
The chair, the armchair and each stool take one pad; the Mini is ordered without. Match the count to the seating plan, not to the number of chairs in the carton.
Confirm on one sheet
La Mercanti sends back a single line per pad family with quantities; check it against the plan before it goes to Hanover.
