India loves decorated surfaces and distrusts their maintenance — usually with reason. Azulej breaks the trade-off: the richest patchwork in the Mutina catalogue carries some of its toughest housekeeping numbers, all manufacturer-declared. Stain resistance class 5, the top of the scale; surface hardness Mohs 6; water absorption 0.04%; declared resistance to chemical attack. The decoration is printed under the glaze, not on it — it does not scrub away.

Patricia Urquiola designed the collection in 2012, reviving the memory of hydraulic cement maiolica through cold digital printing on rectified glazed porcelain, 20×20 cm: unsaturated, slightly worn colours fixed with deliberate irregularity, so every wall keeps a handmade air. Three bases — Bianco, Grigio, Nero — carry 27 patterns in the pre-balanced combination box, plus nine single patterns per colour: Gira, Estrela, Trama, Prata, Trevo, Renda, Flores, Cubo, Diagonal. Awards followed fast: Wallpaper* 2013, Interior Innovation 2014.

Where it works hardest

Declared use: floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, thermal-shock resistant. Washroom walls and floors, reception fronts, cafeteria feature walls, covered verandahs — with slip data R9 and DCOF 0.62 for level interior floors, and a dedicated skirting to finish. Decorated tiles usually age badly in high-traffic Indian buildings - why would Azulej differ?
Because the decoration is not a surface film: the digital print sits under a glaze declared class 5 for stains - the maximum - with Mohs 6 hardness and resistance to chemical attack, so housekeeping chemicals and hard-water scale do not dull the graphics. Absorption of 0.04% leaves dirt nowhere to soak in. The manufacturer's one practical instruction is an entrance mat, because grit is the only real abrasive.
What is the difference between the combination and the single patterns?
The combination is one reference containing all 27 patterns per colour family, pre-balanced for random laying - one line in the BOQ produces the full patchwork. The nine single patterns per colour (Gira, Estrela, Trama, Prata, Trevo, Renda, Flores, Cubo, Diagonal) are ordered individually for controlled designs. Plain bases and the 4.7x20 skirting complete the system.
Is it suitable for floors, or should it stay on walls?
Declared use covers both, indoor and outdoor. For floors the declared data are Mohs 6, class 5 stains, R9 with DCOF 0.62 - suited to level interior floors of washrooms, receptions and cafeterias; where a higher slip class is mandated, the designer decides with the datasheet from this page. On walls there is no such limit, which is why the boldest patchwork often goes vertical.
Can it continue onto a covered verandah in Indian weather?
Yes - declared for indoor and outdoor use with thermal-shock resistance per ISO 10545/9 and ASTM C484, frost resistance besides, and 0.04% absorption against monsoon humidity. The washroom patchwork can flow to the verandah without changing material.
Which documents come with it for green-building submissions?
