Bas-Relief delivers the sculpture without the penance — a relief carved in porcelain, unglazed, colour through the body, with declared numbers that read like a facilities wishlist: stain resistance class 5, water absorption 0.07%, chemical resistance, deep abrasion 274.4 mm³. The texture catches light, not dirt: cleaning is a neutral detergent and a sponge that follows the relief.

Patricia Urquiola designed it for Mutina in 2010 as a continuation of Déchirer — relief and incision with a more austere hand. The production is genuinely artisanal: clays extruded and cut by hand, ±2 mm declared tolerance, each piece protected by a peel-off silicone film. Four textures in Bianco, Cipria and Nero: Code, cipher-like and severe; Patchwork, overlapping and never repeating; Garland, a digital floral; Cloud, air bubbles fixed in abstraction. Two registered designs since 2011.

A carved surface in Indian dust and humidity - is that not asking for trouble?
The material answers both worries. Dust: the relief is porcelain, not plaster - cleaning is a neutral detergent and a sponge that rides the carving, with stain resistance declared at class 5, the top of the scale. Humidity: absorption is 0.07% against the 3% its norm group allows, with chemical resistance declared. The drama sits in the shadow play, not in the maintenance schedule.
Which texture goes on floors, and what are the slip numbers?
Only Code, the 26.5x18 base: declared for floors and walls with R11 and DCOF 0.56 against the 0.42 threshold. Patchwork, Garland and Cloud are declared wall claddings - their deep relief is sculpture, not a walking surface. The intended pairing: Code underfoot, one carved texture as the feature wall behind reception or in the washroom.
What makes this different from the 3D wall panels available locally?
Three documented facts: it is unglazed porcelain with colour through the body, extruded and cut by hand with the tolerance declared on the datasheet; the relief drawings are protected by two registered designs filed in 2011; and it carries Urquiola's signature within Mutina's collection - a provenance a pressed panel cannot claim. How demanding is the installation for a local contractor?
Demanding of order, not of exotic skill - and the datasheet spells out every step: slow-setting porcelain adhesive so pieces can be adjusted, 2 mm joints on spacer wedges to absorb the hand-made tolerance, tiles mixed from several boxes, and the silicone film left on until grouting is finished, then peeled and sponged. Brief the team once and the wall builds itself.
Can it face the outdoors - verandahs, entrance courts?
Yes by declaration: all four textures are indoor-outdoor wall claddings, resistant to thermal shock (ISO 10545/9) and frost (ISO 10545/12), at 0.07% absorption.
