Luxury in Indian interiors is measured in density of workmanship — and Chamotte delivers a number: 65 handmade pieces per square metre. Each brick is artisanal double-fired ceramic, 7.2×21.3 cm, glazed with art-pottery colours poured in irregular brushstrokes so no two repeat. A reception wall in Chamotte is not tiled; it is set, like stonework in a jewel house.

Patricia Urquiola (2023) designed three modules on the single format — plain Mono, ribbed Linea, cusped Quadra — in six glossy colours: Bianco, Blu, Terra, Ocra, Nero, Verde. Mutina publishes eight official layouts with percentages (Boiserie 40/60, Damiers up to five colours) so the density stays composed. The name is the material's own story: chamotte is crushed fired ceramic reborn in raw clay — 5-8% pre-consumer recycled content declared. Stain class 5 and class A resistance up to pool chemicals keep the jewel practical.

What does 65 pieces per square metre mean for perceived luxury?
It is the density argument: where a large slab gives one gesture per wall, Chamotte gives sixty-five - each one hand-finished, each glaze poured with its own brushstroke. The eye reads the work even before understanding it, the way it reads inlay or brickwork in heritage architecture. For lobbies and boardrooms that must signal craftsmanship without ornament, density is the quietest possible flex - and at 60 pieces per box, it is orderable like any tile.
Is the glossy glaze practical in Indian conditions?
The declared numbers say yes for its declared home - indoor walls: stain class 5, the top grade, and class A resistance to acids, household chemicals and even pool chemicals, so washroom and spa walls with hard-water splash are covered. The one care rule from the sheet: minimal abrasives, as with any glossy surface. Colour is fired in, not painted on - it does not fade with cleaning cycles.
Why can it not go on floors or exteriors?
Because it is double-fired wall ceramic - a lighter, more porous body that is the historic technique for wall maiolica, declared by the manufacturer for indoor wall covering only. The reward for that honesty is glaze depth porcelain cannot reach. For floors and outdoor areas, Mutina's porcelain collections take over; La Mercanti pairs them so one project speaks both languages.
How should the contractor plan the installation?
By the sheet: perfectly flat walls, slow-setting adhesive so handmade pieces (declared tolerance ±1.8 mm) can be adjusted, pieces laid edge to edge without spacers, alignment held with wedges and a straightedge, grout optional. Is the recycled-content story documented, or is it marketing?
Documented at the source: chamotte is by definition crushed fired ceramic folded back into raw clay, so the recycling sits in the material's own name and recipe. The LEED 4.1 declaration puts the figure at 5-8% pre-consumer content, and the catalogue adds a body free of VOC and SVHC plus fully recyclable packaging. EPD and HPD papers come through La Mercanti; sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.
