India has always known that a pattern on the floor is a message: the kolam at the doorstep, the rangoli for the festival — geometry laid down to mark a threshold, welcome a guest, declare an occasion. Fringe speaks that language in porcelain: engraved parallel segments that draw ceramic rugs on the floor, each field marking a territory — the lobby, the lounge, the passage — «the act to follow defined by the fringe around the borders», in the words of Michael Anastassiades, whose first Mutina collection this is (2023).

The system is compact and endlessly combinable: one format, 12.3×12.3 cm, rectified unglazed porcelain, two weights — Thin (6 mm) and Bold (15 mm) — modular on a mandatory 3 mm joint, 5 colours (White, Anthracite, Grey, Rose, Red) and a designer's Cahier of 17 layouts. The epoxy grout, in tone or in contrast, changes the result significantly — choose it like a sixth colour. Full-body material: absorption 0.06%, Mohs 8, stain class 5 — the pattern survives the traffic it welcomes.

Why compare Fringe to a kolam?
Because both use pattern on the floor to say something: a kolam at the doorstep marks the threshold, welcomes, declares the day - geometry as communication, refreshed each morning. Fringe engraves that role permanently: each ceramic field marks a territory in the open plan, and the border between two patterns announces the change of activity, exactly as Anastassiades describes - «the act to follow defined by the fringe around the borders». The difference is longevity: this pattern is full-body porcelain, Mohs 8, and survives decades of feet instead of one day.
How do Thin and Bold work together?
As two densities of the same voice: Thin (6 mm segments) is the fine weave for large, calm fields; Bold (15 mm) the emphatic one for borders, entries and accents - same 12.3×12.3 format, same five colours, modular on the mandatory 3 mm joint. The designer's Cahier gives 17 layouts with exact mix ratios (Thin 100%, 50/50, 90/10, 42/58...), ready to hand to the contractor as laying drawings - a rare luxury: the pattern book comes signed by the designer himself.
Is the grout colour really that important?
Declared so: Mutina states the final result «changes significantly» with the grout, and shows it - Bold White with dark blue turns graphic, Anthracite with light blue glows, Thin Rose with dark red reads like textile. Tone-on-tone gives a quiet monolithic field; contrast turns the 3 mm grid into ornament - the closer instinct to Indian floors, where the border is never shy. The specification is epoxy grout, for colour stability and wear resistance, cleaned before it cures; treat its colour as the sixth colour and sample it with the tile.
Will it survive Indian traffic, water and housekeeping?
On declared numbers, comfortably: full-body unglazed porcelain with 0.06% absorption, Mohs 8 surface hardness, stain class 5 - the top grade - and chemical resistance intact under real housekeeping. Wet areas are covered with rare completeness: R10, DIN 51097 class B (barefoot wet zones - showers, pool surrounds), DCOF 0.51, Pendulum 55/40; submerged or sloping zones, where class C would apply, go to the consultant. Frost resistance is declared too, so covered terraces and outdoor passages are in scope.
What documentation and logistics support the project?
Dated declarations: 20% pre-consumer recycled content across all colours (LEED 4.1, 2023) - useful for IGBC files - ISO 14000/9001 production, EPD, HPD and VOC on request via La Mercanti. Logistics are simple: 42-piece boxes (0.64 sqm), 65.62 pieces per square metre, mandatory 3 mm joint.
