India stands on volcanic stone: the Deccan is one of the great lava plateaus of the planet, and its dark basalt built forts, temples and half of Mumbai's plinths. Kosei speaks that mineral language in a modern grammar: surfaces inspired by obsidian and volcanic glass, made of extruded, unglazed porcelain — «soft earth, shaped by a drawing process» — with a velvety touch and colour running through the body. Design by Vincent Van Duysen (2022); the name is Japanese: kosei, composition.

And composition is the offer: six modular formats — 60×60, 15×90, 15×60, 15×30, 15×15, plus a left/right Chevron — in five earths (Bone, Storm, Terra, Grey Green, Dark Grey), moving «from a homogeneous layout to a very rhythmic and graphic one». The numbers suit Indian reality: stain class 5, chemical resistance class A even at high concentration, absorption 0.06%, DCOF 0.84 and Pendulum 55/45 — monsoon-wet entrances included — with V2 minimal variation for phased procurement.

Why does Kosei feel familiar to Indian eyes?
Because the reference is geological kin: the collection is inspired by lava rocks - obsidian, volcanic glass - and India lives on one of Earth's great lava provinces, the Deccan plateau, whose dark basalt built everything from Ajanta's cliffs to Mumbai's colonial plinths. Kosei translates that familiar mineral gravity into extruded porcelain: through-body colour, velvety unglazed surface, five earths from Bone to Dark Grey. The character of basalt, without its quarrying, weight or porosity - absorption is a declared 0.06%.
Is it practical for Indian traffic, monsoon and housekeeping?
The declared numbers answer directly: stain class 5 - the top grade, where chai and turmeric are daily visitors - chemical resistance class A even at high concentration (real housekeeping chemistry included), absorption 0.06%, and a slip file that covers the monsoon-wet entrance: DCOF 0.84 against the 0.42 reference, Pendulum 55 dry/45 wet, DIN barefoot class B for showers and pool surrounds. Submerged or sloping zones, where class C would apply, remain with the consultant. Frost resistance is declared too - hill-station projects included.
What does «composition» mean in practice?
Van Duysen's method, stated in his own words: «from a homogeneous layout to a very rhythmic and graphic one». Six formats share their modules and the 2 mm joint - 60×60 calm for lobbies, 15×90 bands for corridors, 15×15 for intimate zones, a left/right chevron for depth - and the five earths are one volcanic family that mixes without risk. One collection can therefore carry villa, office and hospitality programmes: change the rhythm, not the material. La Mercanti prepares laying drawings and per-format quantities.
What is extruded porcelain - and why should a buyer care?
It is the drawn, not pressed, way of making ceramics: the body is pushed through a die - «soft earth, shaped by a drawing process» - producing a dense through-body material with a velvety unglazed skin: no glaze layer to wear off, the colour is the clay itself. Kosei holds this artisan technology to rectified tolerances - slabs «each exactly the same as the others» - with V2 minimal variation, so phased orders and future extensions match. For high-traffic Indian projects: nothing to strip, nothing to fade.
What about stairs, documentation and ordering?
The kit is complete: dedicated step tread (33×60×4.5) with corner piece - staircases, external ones included, stay in-system - plus skirting 3.8×60. Documentation: ISO 14001 production, with VOC, EPD, SVHC and Declaration of Contents on request through La Mercanti for project files. Packing runs per format (60×60: 2 pcs/box, 0.72 sqm; chevron: 14 pcs); La Mercanti converts the laying drawing into per-format quantities, spares and delivery, and sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.
