Uno designer desk by Della Rovere with storage box

The box is part of the drawing: storage inside the Uno desk

Della Rovere

Karim Rashid

A pedestal is usually something you buy afterwards and push out of sight. On Uno the box is part of the drawing: a melamine-faced wood element, ABS edged, standing on its own chromed iron tripod beside the moulded shell. It was designed to be seen, which is why it has its own finish range instead of matching by default.

For a headquarters that has to look considered on day one, that changes the brief: the storage decision happens at design stage rather than at handover. The desk spans 220 by 103 centimetres at 75 high, the shell is high-density polyurethane, and the whole piece carries a GOOD DESIGN Award from 2008. Design by Karim Rashid. La Mercanti specifies both elements together for Indian corporate floors.

FAQ

Is the storage box included with the desk?
It is described on the datasheet as part of Uno, in melamine-faced wood agglomerate with ABS edging, carried by a chromed iron tripod. The exact scope of supply is confirmed in writing on the order.
Can the box be finished differently from the desk?
Yes. The box has its own three finishes — dark oak, walnut 2 and white — while the shell has nine lacquer shades. The two choices are made separately.
Why put storage in the open instead of hiding it?
Because it was drawn as an element of the composition rather than added later. On a floor where meeting rooms are glazed, a designed storage element ages better than a pedestal pushed under a top.
How much room does the desk need?
220 by 103 centimetres at 75 high, plus circulation. The depth of 103 is what accommodates the box next to the working area.
Does this desk carry a design award?
Yes, the GOOD DESIGN Award 2008 in the Furniture category, from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

How to brief storage that is meant to be seen

Five steps for a headquarters where the pedestal is part of the design.

Decide the storage at design stage
The box belongs to the drawing of the desk, not to a later purchase order.
Choose its finish separately
Three box finishes against nine shell shades: match them or contrast them on purpose.
Plan the depth
103 centimetres carry both the work surface and the box beside it.
Look at the tripod
Chromed iron under the box is the only metal in the piece: it should be seen, not hidden.
Confirm the scope in writing
What is included with the desk is stated on the order confirmation. La Mercanti sets that out before the order.
