Spike executive desk by Frezza with walnut melamine top

An executive desk that clocks in every day: Spike

Frezza

Giorgio Topan

Plenty of executive desks are bought for the photograph and then asked to survive ten hours of files, laptops and tea. Spike is built the other way around: a structure of thick steel blades, joined to the legs with simple screws, under tops that include hard-working melamine finishes — walnut, oak, light elm, black ash — alongside the veneer, marble-finish HPL and glass of the showpiece versions. Designed by Giorgio Topan for Frezza, it treats robustness as part of the design, not an apology for it.

The practical logic runs through the whole program: a return-top version that adds a second work surface, service units with drawers, doors and even a minibar, meeting tables that assemble by modules when the team grows, and a Mediawall table for video calls. La Mercanti supplies Spike to offices where the director’s desk is the busiest desk in the building — and it ships from Italy with the finishes agreed on paper first.

FAQ

Is melamine acceptable on an executive desk?
On Spike it is a deliberate option, offered next to veneer, marble-finish HPL and glass: eight melamine finishes from white to black velvet, on the same thick steel structure. You choose by use, not by hierarchy.
What extra work surface does the return top add?
The return version takes the desk from 90 to 190 cm of depth, creating an L of usable surface for files, a second screen or a colleague pulled up beside you. Width stays at 180, 200 or 220 cm.
Does the service unit really hold a fridge?
The load-bearing service unit — 153 or 203 cm wide — accepts an integrated minibar, and one version adds a lift-up top in etched glass. Storage, hospitality and structure in one cabinet.
How do the meeting tables grow with the team?
By modules: depths of 120, 160 or 180 cm and lengths up to 320 or 420 cm, combined to reach the size the room needs, with plugs housed in the black central insert.
What holds the desk together underneath?
Blades of thick steel sheet, with the horizontal and vertical structure joined by simple screws — a construction you can inspect, tighten and trust for years of daily use.
