The 164-centimetre lobby: Funny Sat by IVM Office
Grade-A floor plates in Indian metros are leased by the square foot and planned by the centimetre — and the reception is where the compression shows first. Funny Sat by IVM Office, designed by Stefano Bigi, answers with a complete front desk in 164 cm of frontage and 85 cm of depth: hemispherical sound-absorbing panel towards the visitor, shaped worktop, lockable swivel drawer, suspended CPU holder and a lacquered welcome shelf, all on a footprint smaller than two workstations.
Nothing about the compactness reads as economy. The panel is thermoformed 100% PET with Trevira CS fabric faces and an Italian Class 1 fire rating; the 30 mm top wears a cement render effect over an FSC-certified board; the base is either a fixed white column or a LINAK motorised lift from 75 to 115 cm. The shape is an EU registered design, filed in 2017. For the corporate fit-outs La Mercanti follows in India, it suits the spaces that grew faster than their entrances — the serviced floor, the clinic, the studio that suddenly receives clients. A lobby is not measured in square feet; it is measured in whether it works.

How does the front panel attach to the desk?
Through shaped 5 mm steel brackets, powder-coated matte white RAL 9016, that clamp the hemispherical panel to the worktop. Three bracket set-ups exist — panel only, panel plus one welcome shelf, panel plus two — so the configuration is settled at order and the side at assembly.
How large is the welcome shelf, and what is it for?
Each shelf is 55 cm wide and 30 cm deep, in 18 mm MDF with a matt lacquer — orange, green, sky blue or sand. It gives the visitor a surface of their own: the courier's scanner, the guest's folder, the tablet for a signature, all without reaching over the counter.
Can two Funny Sat desks be combined?
Yes — the IVM catalogue itself shows paired units, curves side by side, including mixed colours. Two desks give a longer front line for co-working receptions or twin operators while keeping each 164 cm module independent, movable and separately configured.
What exactly is the panel made of?
A single material, worked three ways: 100% PET as a Trevira CS FR fabric on both faces and as a 12 mm fibre core between them, thermoformed into shape. The sandwich carries an Italian Class 1 fire-resistance rating — a declared figure, not a brochure adjective.
Is any civil work needed to install it?
None. Funny Sat is freestanding furniture on felt glides: no masonry counter, no anchoring, no fit-out delay. The motorised version needs one power point; when the office relocates — as growing companies do — the reception moves as easily as a desk.

Steal space from circulation, not from work
Funny Sat needs 164 by 85 cm plus standing room for one visitor. Look at the entry corridor before sacrificing a workstation: a widened passage of 1.5 metres often absorbs the whole desk without touching a single seat count.
Put the curve where the lift opens
Visitors decide their path in the first two steps out of the lift. Aim the hemisphere at that point and the desk itself does the wayfinding — no signage, no floor arrows, no receptionist waving.
Choose the shelf side by the visitor stream
The welcome shelf mounts right or left at assembly. Place it on the side the queue naturally forms, so a second visitor waits at the shelf instead of hovering over the first one's shoulders.
Plan the desk as the security point
Badge printer on the worktop, spare passes in the lockable swivel drawer, CPU on its suspended holder with its own lock. One piece of furniture becomes the access-control station, with every valuable behind a key.
Keep one power point in the plan
The motorised column asks for a single socket; everything else is mechanical. On a raised-floor plate, one floor box behind the desk keeps the entrance free of trunking — and free to be rearranged next year.
