Every high-traffic floor in India eventually asks the same question: what happens when the surface wears? Déchirer answers by having no surface at all — it is unglazed full-body porcelain, colour distributed through the entire 12 mm body «with the sole distribution of quality bodies». No glaze layer, no print film: what the lobby walks on in year ten is the same material as day one. The numbers are emphatic — Mohs 8 hardness, breaking strength 61.2 N/mm² against the 35 required, absorption 0.06%, deep-abrasion compliant.

The engineering carries a pedigree: this is Patricia Urquiola's first Mutina collection (2008), her homage to concrete — matte, chromatic, kept ceramic — with a walkable bas-relief she called «elegantly skid-resistant» (R10 both textures, DIN 51097 B). Six international awards (Best of NeoCon 2009, Good Design 2010, ICFF 2011 among them) and four registered designs. Five colours across Decor and Neutral, cement-toned La Suite, a recycled-glass wall mosaic, formats up to the 120×120 hexagon.

Where it endures

Where the body goes, the building follows: floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, frost-proof — lobbies, boardrooms, washrooms, cafeterias, terraces. Step, corner and skirting complete the system. Datasheet and certificates on this page.

FAQ

What does full-body actually buy us over glazed tile in Indian traffic?
Immunity to the one failure glazed floors cannot escape: wear-through. In Déchirer the colour is the body itself, all 12 mm - no glaze film to scratch white, no print layer for trolley wheels and grit to abrade into ghost lanes. Mohs 8 hardness and deep-abrasion compliance mean even monsoon sand under footfall polishes rather than damages. What a lobby looks like at handover is what it looks like a decade of heavy traffic later.
Is 12 mm thickness and 61.2 N/mm2 overkill or necessary?
It is headroom: the standard demands 35 N/mm² and Déchirer declares 61.2 - a 75% margin that translates into slabs that shrug off point loads, planters, pallet trolleys and the occasional dropped toolbox. Combined with 0.06% absorption (declared to both ISO and ASTM) and frost resistance, the same material runs from executive floors to open terraces without a spec change. Over-engineering is what fifty-year floors are made of.
How does the bas-relief work for safety without looking industrial?
That was the invention Urquiola patented and juries rewarded: a barely perceptible relief - torn memories, she calls it - that grips like a safety finish while reading like sculpture. Both textures declare R10 and DIN 51097 class B with Pendulum Class 1; the relief is in the body, so it cannot wear off. Washrooms, wet corridors and terraces get their traction from design, not from an ugly add-on range. For barefoot spa zones, place the declared classes before your consultant.
Which formats suit which spaces in a corporate fit-out?
Big plates for big statements: 120×120 (1.44 sqm per slab) and 60×120 keep lobby floors nearly jointless; the oversize 120 hexagon is the signature gesture; 60×60 handles corridors and washrooms; the random mosaic and recycled-glass Glass dress feature walls. Step, corner and skirting pieces detail stairs and edges within the same language. Five colours plus three cement tones of La Suite cover the whole building's palette.
What documentation and installation discipline should the contractor plan?
Green file: 20% pre-consumer recycled content (LEED 4.1 declaration), a glaze-free production process with 100% recycled water, ISO 14001/9001 - EPD and HPD on request via La Mercanti, useful for IGBC/LEED submissions. Site file: porcelain adhesive, 2 mm joints with wedges, tiles from several boxes, and mandatory double-buttering under 120×120 slabs. Care: neutral detergent only. Sample costs fully credited at order confirmation.

The floor that never shows its age: Déchirer in five steps

Five steps for Indian architects and project heads: Urquiola's full-body porcelain from lobby to terrace - engineered margins, designer surface.

Buy the body, not the surface
Full-body colour through 12 mm means wear cannot expose anything: specify it where traffic is heaviest and repainting is impossible.
Use the margin
61.2 N/mm² against 35 required, Mohs 8, frost-proof: one material from boardroom to rooftop, no spec change at the terrace door.
Let the relief handle safety
Decor's R10/B walkable bas-relief gives washrooms and wet zones their grip without switching to an industrial range.
Detail inside the family
Hexagon for the gesture, mosaic for transitions, step and skirting for edges - and colour-matched grouts to finish the concrete read.
Write the site rules
2 mm joints, wedges, multiple boxes, double-buttering on 120s: four BOQ lines that protect the investment. La Mercanti computes crates and spares.
