Director table Asymmetrical by Tecno with chromed grommet on the fixed pad

The chromed grommet and the hole in the top: Asymmetrical by Tecno, the director's desk that is drilled only on request, design Piero Lissoni

Tecno does not drill the basic Asymmetrical unless you ask. The 1AS4811 and 4812 desks, with the fixed leather pad, leave the factory with an unbroken top; the chromed cable grommet, with its hole cut in the top, is a separate line in the price list, 1ASMAG1510, ordered only by those who need a cable to come up through the surface. The drawing shows where the hole goes on the desk with the fixed pad, so that it lands where the lamp or the monitor cable wants it and not in the middle of the writing area. Piero Lissoni drew one cabinet and a thick top hovering past it; Tecno protects that top by making the hole a decision rather than a default. The electrified desks have no need of it: their pad lifts onto the sockets and the top stays whole.

The detail sits inside a range that fits on one page: 242 × 135, 272 × 200 and 307 × 200 cm, 75 cm high; a 220 × 95 or 250 × 100 cm writing top; a two-faced cabinet that Tecno keeps off the wall; fourteen lacquer colours, matt or gloss, plus ten veneers, walnut on Black or Black on walnut, since each part has its own code. The conference tables Asymmetrical Meeting, rectangular to 550 cm, oval and round, and the Solenoids tables carry the same signature. La Mercanti asks before the order whether a cable must come through the top of Asymmetrical, because the hole is cut in Italy and cannot be added on site without a second top.

FAQ

How big is the writing top?
220 × 95 cm on the smallest desk and 250 × 100 cm on the two larger ones; the rest of the overall size is the cabinet standing beside it. On Asymmetrical the top is the same on the two larger desks: what grows is the cabinet, from 65 to 98 cm deep.
Is the height adjustable?
Tecno lists Asymmetrical at one height, 75 cm, in all three sizes; no other height appears in the price list. The desk chair is chosen for that height, and the 7 cm thickness of the top leaves less knee room than a thin table at the same 75.
How many oaks, and which other veneers?
Six oaks, light, medium, dark, white, grey and black, plus Canaletto walnut, bamboo, curly eucalyptus and zebrano: ten veneers for the top and the cabinet of Asymmetrical, coded separately. Tecno notes that grain and knots are characteristics of natural wood, not defects.
What are the Solenoids?
Small side tables that Piero Lissoni drew for the same collection: Ø42 cm and 58 cm high, or 60 × 42 cm and 48 cm high, with a back-painted glass top in white or black and a frame in the same colour. Tecno places them in the waiting area outside an office furnished with Asymmetrical.
Why does Tecno insist on the drawing?
Because the collection has no regular shapes: Tecno prints in the price list that overall size and the position of the supports must be checked on the drawing. For Asymmetrical that means the cabinet footprint and the floor outlet are taken from the quoted plan, not measured from the top.

How to specify Asymmetrical in a tender document

Five entries that describe Asymmetrical in a BOQ or technical specification using only the words Tecno itself declares.

Name the collection and the designer
Write "Asymmetrical, Tecno, design Piero Lissoni, 2006": it is the designation the manufacturer prints, and it identifies the desk without ambiguity.
Describe the structure in the manufacturer's words
A 7 cm top cantilevered over a two-sided side cabinet, right-hand or left-hand: that is how Tecno describes Asymmetrical, and the specification copies it rather than paraphrasing it.
Give size, height and cabinet dimensions
242 × 135, 272 × 200 or 307 × 200 cm, height 75, cabinet 101.5 × 65, 200 × 65 or 200 × 98 cm: the figures of Asymmetrical that the electrical contractor and the space planner both need.
Write electrification as a kit, not as a feature
Kit 1AS1511 or 1512 ordered separately, sockets and switch supplied, connection and cabling by the customer: specified this way, Asymmetrical does not promise wiring that is not in the code.
List finishes by code
LO or LL with the colour, LE or LS with the species, cabinet with its own code: La Mercanti reads the Asymmetrical specification before it is issued so that every line can be ordered as written.
