Arper describes Cari as built on the interplay of two things that usually pull against each other: a generous shell that gives the piece its architectural presence, and integrated soft upholstery that brings comfort and warmth. The shell is what a room reads from across the floor; the padding is what a person feels after ten minutes. Both were drawn together, which is unusual enough to be worth saying.

That presence is why the same chair is proposed for a boardroom, an executive office and the seating in a reception or waiting area, where a single well-drawn piece does more than a crowd of small ones. The shell is recycled and recyclable polypropylene with integrated armrests, the polyurethane padding is assembled without glue and a hidden zip allows the cover to be replaced. What does a generous shell change in a room?
It gives the chair a presence that reads from a distance, which is what Arper calls its architectural quality. In a large boardroom or an open reception, a piece with volume anchors the space; a light frame disappears into it. The padding then does the opposite job, close up, where the person actually sits.
Does a larger shell mean a heavy-looking chair?
The description sets the shell against controlled, fluid lines, so the volume is in the proportion rather than in bulk. It is the kind of thing better judged with the chair in front of you than from a photograph.
Where are the armrests?
They are integrated into the shell rather than added to it, and the manufacturer presents them as giving support and a sense of protection. There is no separate arm to align or tighten.
